Your New Year’s Home Resolution: Install or upgrade your security system.

Every 13 seconds in America, home intrusions occur, what will you tell your family if this happens in your home.

According to a Popular Mechanics article: Here are 6 Ways to Protect Yourself From a Home Invasion

Statistically rare but devastating, home invasions are the kind of low-probability, high-consequence nightmare that is difficult to guard against without seeming and feeling like a hopelessly paranoid person. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared. New Jersey—based Gun For Hire, which provides tactical training for law enforcement and civilians, teaches that the best way to stop a home invasion is one step at a time. (And check out video of our day of handgun training with Gun For Hire.)

If You Own a Gun for Self-Defense, Prepare

Gun ownership comes with grave responsibilities and may not be for everyone. Pull a gun only if you are trained to use it. Practice shooting with both eyes open—depth perception and peripheral vision are needed in an actual gunfight.

2 Plant Thorny Bushes Around Windows

Not only do these shrubs serve as an aesthetically pleasing deterrent, they also can collect DNA from blood and skin. And torn clothes can leave evidence that does not require an FBI lab to analyze.

3 Designate a Safe Room…

and make sure to tell your family or roommates so they know where to go in a crisis. The room should have a landline phone, a flashlight, and, if you own one, a firearm. Mount doors on hinges that swing out; they are harder to breach than those that swing in.

4 Store Your Gun Somewhere Accessible, and with a Flashlight

A gun safe should have rubber buttons because, according to Gun For Hire instructor and police detective John McAloon, “biometric safes can fail if your fingers are sweaty or covered in blood.” Instead of a weapon-mounted flashlight, keep a spare handheld light to avoid pointing a gun at neighbors, family members, or cops.

5 Know Your Local Laws

Use-of-force laws differ by state: In New Jersey, you can shoot only if there is no escape route or if someone else is threatened; in Ohio, it’s legal to shoot trespassers just for being there. “Every bullet you fire comes with a lawyer attached,” says Joe Sente, a police officer and Gun For Hire instructor. Check your state attorney general’s website for details.
